The Great Migration: Nature’s Most Epic Show

Every year, more than 2 million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles embark on an ancient, awe-inspiring journey across East Africa. Known as The Great Migration, this spectacle of survival is one of the most thrilling natural events on the planet — and it happens right here in our backyard.

At Great African Wonders, we take you to the heart of the action, where the thundering hooves, dramatic river crossings, and predator-prey chases unfold right before your eyes.

What Is the Great Migration?

The Great Migration is the circular movement of herbivores between Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park and Kenya’s Masai Mara Reserve in search of fresh grazing lands and water. It’s not a one-time event but an ongoing journey, influenced by rainfall patterns and the rhythm of life on the savannah.

Follow the thundering hooves of wildebeest and zebras across the Serengeti and Masai Mara.

Where to Go & When

Timing is everything. Here’s a quick guide to help you plan your trip:

  • January – March:
    Location: Southern Serengeti (Ndutu region)
Highlight: Calving season — thousands of baby wildebeest are born each day.
Bonus: Big cats are on high alert, making for dramatic sightings.

  • April – June:
    Location: Central to Western Serengeti
Highlight: Herds begin moving north. Expect fewer crowds and stunning green landscapes.

  • July – October:
Location: Northern Serengeti & Masai Mara
Highlight: Gripping Mara River crossings — animals brave crocodile-infested waters.
Peak migration months — ideal for thrilling photo ops.

  • November – December:
    Location: Eastern Serengeti
Highlight: Herds return south, completing the cycle. Still plenty of action.

  1. This is the best tour on the east coast! It was amazing how many places we visited and what great memories we made!

  2. This was not our first time going to here. It is a great place to shop not too far from New York. We took the bus from Port Authority and traveled through the countryside to get there.

  3. We always stay at here when in town. The location is great, staff is wonderful and we love the overall feel. Beautiful view from the here.
